Looks like I missed posting on National Coming Out Day, which was on Wednesday. Whoops. The day is important, and here is a good piece written by Chelsea Manning about not letting marriage equality victories overshadow other important battles for LGBTQ rights.
National Coming Out Day is important, as it creates a visible space for LGBTQ people to openly come out. The problem with it is that it subtly creates pressure for LGBTQ people to come out, even if they would not be safe in doing so.
There’s a perception (by many online) that LGBTQ people are privileged, coddled people who are really just confused about their identity. I’ve written about this before, but it’s shocking to me how people choose to ignore the shockingly high rate of violence that LGBTQ people face, as well as other aspects of discrimination.
