It’s a bit shocking to me the degree that people are willing to speak with authority about transgender people without ever talking to actual transgender people. Radio programs, television shows, newspaper columnists have no excuse for this. People with fewer resources than media enterprises can find oodles of YouTube videos or even Wikipedia articles on the topic.

This is not exactly a radical position. You could say the same thing about Muslims, undocumented immigrants, people of color, women, or poor people. If you’re talking about an issue that relates to a certain community, then talk to someone from that community.

News organizations like to act as if it takes serious detective work to track down transgender people. People I talk to think it’s an excuse to tell me that they’ve never met an (openly) transgender person. But it doesn’t take Sherlock Holmes to use Google!
