A writer named Deo recently posted a long exposé on Medium about white supremacist recruitment within online nerd subculture communities. It’s honestly a great piece of investigative journalism that’s worth reading. But, it connects some dots I’ve been thinking about for a while.
There’s a general sense in the media (read: old people) that the internet is a bastion of liberal values. It’s sort of an odd statement to make, given how large and complex the internet and its subsequent communities are. But, as this article and GamerGate–and, honestly, oodles of other examples–have shown, it’s not that simple.
