I wrote about this a few days ago, but progressive podcast host Sam Seder is under attack for a satirical tweet criticizing rape apologists who want to forgive Roman Polanski. Yes, you read that right–he is being attacked for condemning child rape:
Don’t care re Polanski, but I hope if my daughter is ever raped it is by an older truly talented man w/a great sense of mise en scene,
The tweet was from 2009, when progressives were condemning mainstream media hacks who defended Polanski raping a 13 year old girl. Seder’s post was sent along other tweets condemning those who would forgive Polanski’s heinous crime due to this directorial talent. There is no good faith reading of this tweet in context that should lead anyone to believe that Seder was promoting rape.
These charges were trumped up by alt-right voice Mike Cernovich, and propped up by Donald Trump Jr. and Sebastian Gorka. They argued that Seder was encouraging the rape of his own daughter. Cernovich himself has a bit of a history tweeting about rape:
“When was the last time women organized to support a men’s rights issue? Stop being fags. Who cares about breast cancer and rape? Not me.
“A woman over 40 is indistinguishable from a tranny.”
“You can’t rape the willing.”
“Have you guys ever tried ‘raping’ a girl without using force? Try it. It’s basically impossible. Date rape does not exist.”
“A whore will let her friend ruin your life with a false rape case. So why should I care when women are raped?”
“After abusing a girl, I always immediately send a text and save her reply.”
And, no, those tweets are not sarcastic or satirical. Click the link above for more context.
NBC– who killed Ronan Farrow’s story on Harvey Weinstein, covered for Matt Lauer for years, and made Trump a star– is throwing Sam Seder under the bus because the Pizzagate guy who thinks date rape doesn’t exist slandered him.
I forgot to mention: Cernovich promoted the conspiracy theory that Hillary Clinton had a child sex ring based out of a pizza restaurant. One alt-right supported actually showed up at the restaurant to investigate–with an AR-15 assault rifle.
Jeff Stein at The Washington Post pointed out that MSNBC still employs Bret Stephens, a man who on the record does not believe that the campus rape epidemic is real. And, as mentioned above, NBC News killed a story about Harvey Weinstein. And allowed Matt Lauer to install a secret button under his desk that locked his door. (I am not making this up.)
I don’t quite know what to say other than what I said in my last post: this is a big blow to independent media. Further, a major news network has just allowed an alt-right misogynist to affect their hiring decisions. MSNBC was never a truly progressive television network; today, they confirmed that.
