North Korea is both mining cryptocurrency and stealing it. If North Korea is doing this, then why can’t ISIS or other terrorist groups? Why can’t another other country subject to sanctions–such as Iran or Russia–do this as well? Or drug cartels or organized crime?
I’m not one to fear monger, but these seem like valid concerns. It seriously undercuts the ability to crack down on legitimate criminal activity. This is not analogous to the privacy of end-to-end encrypted messages–why exactly should currency be able to flow freely without oversight?
More to the point, powerful governments around the world will not allow cryptocurrency to circumvent preexisting laws. All it takes is for the United States or the European Union to crack down, and the market will be hit hard, perhaps catastrophically.
