It’s great to see The Korea Herald running a story about undocumented immigrants in the country. Sometimes there’s too heavy a focus on expats from western countries, which obscures the fact that they only make up a small fraction of Korea’s immigrant population. There’s more to the immigrant experience than Itaewon (이태원), after all.
The bottomline is that South Korea needs immigrants to keep its economy afloat. Short of reunification with North Korea or robots taking over, there’s no workable way around this. Undocumented immigrants are the product of a lack of political courage in the National Assembly.
