I’m not a huge fan of Amy Schumer. Some of her early sketches, such as the Friday Night Lights parody and “Last Fuckable Day“, are absolutely hilarious. On the other hand, she’s also made some pretty racist comments. As I said, I’m not a huge fan, and I think there are valid progressive critiques of her.
Having said that, it’s hard to escape that Breitbart and so-called “men’s rights” groups on Reddit seem to have a real vendetta against her. Spoiler alert: it’s not for any racially insensitivity she possesses.
These netizens’ stated reasons against her are that she’s (1) unfunny and (2) a one-note comedian. Whether or not she is funny is a purely subjective matter, but the second criticism is worth discussing: most of Schumer’s humor comes from her experience as a woman. Dating, weight, sex, misogyny, and her reproductive system are her primary topics. These aren’t exactly going to win over the “quotes Rick from Rick and Morty unironically” crowd.
To reiterate: I’m not a huge Amy Schumer fan, I encourage people to criticize her when it’s deserved, and I am not telling people that they need to find her funny. I am suggesting that we question why so many men on the internet have such unbridled hatred for a pretty standard Hollywood comedian.
