Pyeongchang

Mount Gariwang was once the lush home of a forest of trees aged over 500 years. However, much of the forest was demolished to construct alpine ski courses for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. The construction of the Alpensia and Yongpyong ski resorts stirred up much controversy, particularly among environmentalists and conservationists who were concerned the resort would become a single-use facility. […] Melting snow and running water have led experts to predict a landslide.

I get it: history will remember the Pyeongchang Olympics as a tremendous event due to the thawing of relations with North Korea. However, behind the scenes, it was a total mess. This is frequently the case with the Olympics, after all, but it’s still worth observing.
