Moving the goal posts

Republicans in the early 2000s: “The Second Amendment is basically a lost book of the Bible, but stronger background checks seem kinda reasonable.”

Republicans in the 2010s: “Actually,  background checks are fine as they are. There are already enough restrictions on people who go to a gun store anyway.”

Republicans in 2018: “Forget the gun store, free gun 3D printer models for everyone!”

Conservatives have never really been sensible on guns, but the goal posts have certainly shifted. There’s no real middle ground between moderate gun control advocates and people who think downloading a gun to a 3D printer should be as easy as watching House of Cards. And with a disturbingly right-wing Supreme Court, it’s hard to see things changing anytime soon…
